About the canton of Aargau

The canton of Aargau ranks 10th of the 25 cantons with largely complete parcel data by total parcel area. Of its 196 municipalities with parcel data, Wohlen (AG) (4’894), Aarau (4’831) and Baden (4’634) have the most parcels, which together hold 4.8% of the canton's parcels.

The median parcel in the canton measures 861 m², about the same as the Swiss median of 881 m². The canton is about as built-up as Switzerland as a whole: 55.2% of its parcels have a building, against 51% nationwide. Among its municipalities with at least 500 parcels, Aarburg has the highest share of built parcels (81.5%) and Mandach the lowest (22.9%). Schmiedrued has the largest median parcel (2’725 m²) and Kaiseraugst the smallest (479 m²).

According to the building register, a building in the canton holds 1.3 dwellings on average, against 1.5 across Switzerland. Most residential buildings are single-family houses (72%, against 63.6% across Switzerland). Non-residential buildings account for 39.2% of all buildings.

Built parcels most often have their newest building from 1981 to 2000 (27.6% of them), and 26.4% have one from 2001 or later. The median year built, 1986, is more recent than in Switzerland as a whole (1975).
