About Switzerland

Among the 25 cantons with largely complete parcel data, Valais (638’876), Bern (459’604) and Zurich (391’193) have the most parcels. Of these cantons, Basel-Stadt has the highest share of built parcels (88.2%) and Valais the lowest (26%). Appenzell Innerrhoden has the largest median parcel (1’568 m²) and Basel-Stadt the smallest (371 m²).

According to the building register, a building in Switzerland holds 1.5 dwellings on average. Most residential buildings are single-family houses (63.6%). Non-residential buildings account for 39% of all buildings.

Built parcels most often have their newest building from 1981 to 2000 (21.4% of them), and 21% have one from 2001 or later. The median year built is 1975.
