The canton of St. Gallen ranks 8th of the 25 cantons with largely complete parcel data by number of parcels and 6th by total parcel area. Of its 75 municipalities with parcel data, St. Gallen (11’898), Altstätten (6’326) and Oberriet (SG) (6’114) have the most parcels, which together hold 12.5% of the canton's parcels.

The median parcel in the canton measures 950 m², about the same as the Swiss median of 881 m². The canton is more built-up than Switzerland as a whole: 66.4% of its parcels have a building, against 51% nationwide. Among its municipalities with at least 500 parcels, Widnau has the highest share of built parcels (82.9%) and Muolen the lowest (45.6%). Niederbüren has the largest median parcel (3’246 m²) and Rorschach the smallest (480 m²).

According to the building register, a building in the canton holds 1.3 dwellings on average, against 1.5 across Switzerland. Most residential buildings are single-family houses (68.4%, against 63.6% across Switzerland). Non-residential buildings account for 39.7% of all buildings.
