About the canton of Schwyz

The canton of Schwyz ranks 16th of the 25 cantons with largely complete parcel data by number of parcels and 12th by total parcel area. Of its 30 municipalities with parcel data, Einsiedeln (5’724), Schwyz (4’521) and Küssnacht (SZ) (3’694) have the most parcels, which together hold 27.9% of the canton's parcels.

The median parcel in the canton measures 820 m², about the same as the Swiss median of 881 m². The canton is more built-up than Switzerland as a whole: 71.6% of its parcels have a building, against 51% nationwide. Among its municipalities with at least 500 parcels, Wangen (SZ) has the highest share of built parcels (81.4%) and Sattel the lowest (59.4%). Muotathal has the largest median parcel (1’275 m²) and Lachen the smallest (569 m²).

According to the building register, a building in the canton holds 1.5 dwellings on average, as across Switzerland. Residential buildings mix single-family houses and buildings with several dwellings: single-family houses make up 54.3% of them, against 63.6% across Switzerland. Non-residential buildings account for 41.3% of all buildings.
